The 62nd annual Grammy Awards aired live from the Staples Center just hours after the deaths of NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven other people after their private helicopter crashed. The upsetting news shocked the world; it didn’t feel like a night of celebration, and the ratings for the Grammys reflected that.
According to early data, just 16.5 million people watched the Grammys telecast. Though it dominated the Sunday evening time slot, that figure is abysmal in comparison to previous years. 2018 saw an all-time low of 19.8 million people. I’m no math wiz, but that’s three million less people this year.
CBS warns that the metrics may be off because Nielsen no longer measures metered market numbers. They also claim the 16.5 million figure accounts for those who watched the show live – meaning that number excludes people who caught the individual highlights online or social media.
Look, if you’re going to make Ariana Grande and Lana Del Rey walk home empty handed, you’re going to get poor ratings. It’s really that simple.
