Songwriter Accuses Madonna Of Not Crediting Or Compensating Him For ‘Madame X’ Standout, “God Control”

“Madonna has f—ed me over.”

Former Fischerspooner member, Casey Spooner, demands Madonna make things right. The songwriter claims he was an integral part in the creation of “God Control,” a single off Madonna’s most-recent album, Madame X, and wants compensation and credit.

Spooner says he worked with Madonna’s longtime collaborator, French producer Mirwais, in December 2017. He was under the impression their work together was destined fo Mirwais’ solo album, but it was shelved. Unbeknownst to him, Spooner’s work was instead handed off to Madonna for Madame X.

Spooner reportedly reached out to Mirwais for weeks to seek clarification. He later received a message from Madonna’s management and legal team offering him $10,000 as an advance on publishing compensation and 15% writing credit.

According to screen shots posted on Spooner’s Instagram, Madonna’s lawyer claimed his client “had no idea that Casey had been involved with writing the song.” Mirwais claims he told Madonna, but Madonna says he didn’t.

They asked Spooner if he’d accept a $25,000 advance to avoid a legal battle, but he rejected the offer.

“I HAVE HAD ENOUGH @madonna and @mirwais.official have f—ed me over. I co-wrote GOD CONTROL and I’ve gotten no credit and no compensation,” he wrote on Instagram.

“I’ve been dealing with this for 5 months and I’m over it. I have played nice and been very patient but time is up! And honestly the terms are shitty. I’m getting a 25K advance against publishing royalties which after legal fees and taxes will be 10K?!?! It’s been an endless nightmare of lawyers and waiting and more emails…..and for what?! 10K? I should be getting paid a percentage of the live show.”

“There is no money in record sales. Period. Not even for Madonna. I’ve seen the numbers. @madonna I’ve changed my mind. I think 1% of touring profits will cover my contribution and damages. I mean, it is the opening number in the show. And while you’re galavanting around on stage….I’m completely broke in Berlin. Robbed, ignored and delayed.”

Spooner shared his demo of the track as well.

    1. “and stealing, apparently” – I cannot with this, Jordan. I literally LOL-ed. 🤣

I applaud his honest about being broke and wanting money that’s why he’s going after her in this way. But it’s still wrong. They already offered him money and on top of that a writing credit which means he’s gonna get money off of the streams and sales of the song. And that’s really all a songwriter should get. To ask for a percentage of her touring profits is insane. WHO ARE YOU to ask for that? You’re not Max Martin, sweetie.

      1. He should get everything he’s entitled too. I think everytime someone performs your song in a show the songwriter gets paid.

        1. Oh. It’s cause I don’t have a complete understanding about royalties. Thanks for that. ☺ I always thought that’s the reason why Britney always performs ‘Me Against the Music’ using the original version or a mix without Madonna – but I never got any confirmation. Until now. Thank you.

  1. Yeah, I have no idea how much money he’s entitled to or how publishing compensation works but it’s a weird story because obviously team Madonna is trying to right a wrong in some way. Is that enough money? No clue. But it’s hard to vilify Madonna here.
Oh, and I just watched “God Control” and it was a surprisingly boring song considering the title. I sorta always thought that about Fisherspoon, too. Didn’t they have an album cover with a penis on it? More of that, please.
